Patrick Dorgu, a rising star in Serie A, has become a priority signing for Manchester United during the January transfer window.
New manager Ruben Amorim is eager to secure the 20-year-old as part of his plan to bring in a natural left-sided wing-back for his tactical system.
Dorgu, currently in his second season with Lecce, joined the Italian side from FC Nordsjaelland for €200,000 (£175,000). His impressive performances have solidified his status as one of Serie A’s most promising young talents.
United has already initiated talks with Lecce, but their opening bid of €27m (£22.8m) was turned down. Lecce reportedly values Dorgu at €40m (£33.8m).
Negotiations are set to continue as the transfer deadline approaches, but Lecce is determined to retain the defender until the end of the season.
Club president Saverio Sticchi Damiani emphasized the club’s stance: “We are trying to resist because it is in our interest to keep the players who are key to this group. So far, our idea is to not sell anyone in January.”
However, it’s not just Lecce standing firm. Jens Fonnskov Olsen, Dorgu’s former coach with Denmark’s Under-19 team, has also advised the young talent to reconsider a move to Manchester United.
Olsen, now managing Danish top-tier side Nordsjaelland, expressed concerns over United’s current state of transition.
“I hope he chooses something other than Manchester United right now,” Olsen told Tipsbladet. “It’s not necessarily a bad fit, but they’re in a period lacking structure. Sometimes, things need to happen in the right order for a player’s development.”
Olsen praised Dorgu’s skillset, highlighting his speed, creativity, and strong left foot. “Patrick is fast, forward-thinking, and has excellent heading ability both offensively and defensively.
He’s a creative player who can solve problems on the pitch,” Olsen added. “I’m proud of how far he’s come in his career.”
As discussions between Manchester United and Lecce progress, Dorgu faces a pivotal decision: to join one of the world’s most iconic clubs or to continue his development in a more stable environment.
