Paul Merson has voiced his concerns over Manchester United’s summer acquisition Joshua Zirkzee, suggesting the forward should remain on the bench for their Premier League match against Brentford.

Despite scoring the decisive goal in United’s opening-day victory over Fulham, Zirkzee’s performances since his £36m move from Bologna have left Merson unconvinced.

Speaking to Sportskeeda ahead of United’s match on Saturday, Merson commented, “Joshua Zirkzee did well at Bologna, but it’s a different game here in England, especially at Manchester United. You’re always under the microscope at this club.”

Merson is backing Hojlund to start over Zirkzee, saying, “Against Brentford, I’d choose Hojlund over Zirkzee. He’s a better finisher, in my opinion, and Manchester United will need goals to win this one because Brentford are definitely scoring.”

Former Premier League star Paolo Di Canio has echoed concerns over Zirkzee, labeling him as “too slow for the Premier League” and suggesting he would benefit from a loan move. Di Canio remarked, “He’s not a deadly finisher, but he makes his team-mates play well.” He also urged Juventus to consider a loan deal for Zirkzee, seeing potential for the forward to thrive in Serie A.

United currently sit 14th in the Premier League, trailing 11th-placed Brentford by two points, and are desperate for a win to turn their season around. With growing scrutiny over Ten Hag’s team selections, the decision between Zirkzee and Hojlund will be closely watched.
