Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has voiced his disappointment with Marcus Rashford, criticizing the forward’s decision-making during the recent 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

In a moment that could have shifted the game, Rashford, receiving a precise cross from Bruno Fernandes, opted for a more ambitious strike, aiming for the top of the net.
Scholes, however, felt a simpler side-footed finish would have been more effective, calling it a “simple side-foot volley” from close range.
“He tried to make it look better, but all he needed to do was keep it low,” Scholes commented on Premier League Productions.
The draw at Old Trafford, where United initially led through Fernandes’ penalty before Moises Caicedo’s quick equalizer, left both teams sharing the points.
Yet, missed opportunities, particularly from Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, were central to United’s frustrations. Garnacho missed two promising chances, while Rashford saw his attempt ricochet off the woodwork late in the first half.
Scholes’ criticisms reflect a broader concern with United’s recent lack of scoring depth, a challenge incoming manager Ruben Amorim will need to tackle.
United’s struggle for goals this season has become a notable issue. Only Southampton and Crystal Palace have scored fewer, and Scholes has questioned whether Rashford, Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, or Joshua Zirkzee can reach the needed goal tallies.
Scholes suggested that Amorim’s task is to lift the club’s goal output by 70-80 goals to truly compete, remarking, “Where will the rest of the goals come from? Rashford had a 30-goal season once, but Garnacho seems capable of only 10-15, not the 20-25 they need.”
