Paul Scholes, Manchester United legend, recently expressed his surprise at his former club’s failure to secure Cole Palmer from Manchester City.

Despite being a promising talent and a lifelong United supporter, Palmer moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2023 after facing intense competition at City. Although the £40 million deal raised eyebrows, Palmer has quickly justified Chelsea’s investment.
The 22-year-old scored 25 goals last season and has already contributed to 12 goals in 11 appearances this term, making him a regular starter and a valuable player for both Chelsea and England.
Reflecting on Palmer’s rise, Scholes praised his skill set, describing him as a “brilliant player” with “talent, goals, and assists” who could have strengthened United’s squad. Scholes believes United’s current 14th-place standing in the league might have been different had they signed Palmer.
Chelsea’s positive start to the season under new manager Enzo Maresca has further highlighted Palmer’s influence, while United recently dismissed Erik ten Hag as they struggle in mid-table.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola approved Palmer’s transfer, but Scholes feels United missed an opportunity. Looking to the future, Scholes commented on United’s decision to appoint Ruben Amorim as manager, expressing concern that it could mirror the underwhelming results of Ten Hag’s tenure.
Scholes mentioned his preference for Thomas Tuchel, who has since joined England’s national team, citing Tuchel’s experience and ability to manage top clubs effectively.
