Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has suggested fans should remain calm if the club opts to sell Alejandro Garnacho, even as the young winger draws serious interest from Napoli.
The Italian side is targeting Garnacho as a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is set to join Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth €70 million (£58.9m).
United reportedly value Garnacho at £70 million, but Napoli is seeking to negotiate a deal closer to €50 million (£42.1m).
Meanwhile, financial constraints under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules could push United to consider offers for Kobbie Mainoo, another rising star who has attracted attention from Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Scholes, however, is adamant about Mainoo’s importance to the club. Speaking to TNT Sports, he expressed frustration at the possibility of the midfielder being sold, calling it “ridiculous” given Mainoo’s long-standing development at the club since childhood.
“He’s United’s brightest spark and could lead the team for the next five to ten years,” Scholes said, emphasizing his dismay at the idea of losing a talent nurtured from such a young age.
When asked about Garnacho’s potential departure, Scholes admitted he could understand the reasoning, explaining that while the winger has talent, he still has areas to improve.
“I think United could get better than Garnacho. He’s young and has potential, but his technique can be scruffy, and his decision-making is sometimes poor,” Scholes noted.
Scholes also highlighted Garnacho’s struggle to secure a consistent role in the team, stating, “Finding him a position in this team has been a challenge.” However, he clarified that while Garnacho’s sale wouldn’t be alarming, losing Mainoo would feel like a significant misstep.
