Pep Guardiola has eased concerns over Erling Haaland’s fitness after the Manchester City striker suffered a late injury scare during their dominant 4-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.
Haaland, who was substituted in the 88th minute, was seen clutching his right knee in discomfort, prompting immediate attention from City’s medical staff.

The sight of Guardiola holding his head in his hands fueled fears of a serious issue, with pundit Paul Merson even speculating about a possible ACL injury.
However, speaking after the match, Guardiola downplayed the severity of the situation.
“When he was down, everyone was scared,” the City boss admitted. “But he got up and walked off smiling like always. I haven’t spoken to him or the doctors yet, but there’s been no bad news, so hopefully, he’s fine.”
Merson, who was covering the game for Sky Sports, described how the moment unfolded in real time.
“It looked like his knee gave way he just sort of jarred it,” Merson explained. “He didn’t look comfortable, shaking his head, and Pep immediately put his head in his hands.
The first thing you think of is an ACL injury. Thankfully, he walked off, so hopefully, he’s okay for Wednesday night.”
Haaland, who recently signed a new 10-year contract with City, has been a crucial figure for the team this season, scoring 27 goals in 35 appearances. He also contributed an assist in the Newcastle victory, setting up James McAtee’s goal, while January signing Omar Marmoush netted the other three.
With City trailing 3-2 after the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, they will be desperate for Haaland to be fully fit for Wednesday’s decisive second leg.
Meanwhile, Guardiola has confirmed that Haaland has been added to City’s leadership group following Kyle Walker’s departure in January.
“When Kyle left, Kevin [De Bruyne] became the first [captain], and I nominated Erling,” Guardiola revealed. “When a player is here for 10 years, sooner or later, they take on that responsibility. It’s nice that it’s the first time this has happened in the Premier League.”
City fans will now anxiously await further updates, but for now, Guardiola’s reassurances suggest Haaland could still be available for their massive showdown with Madrid.
