Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has voiced concerns over Arsenal’s lack of creative output this season, suggesting that manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to sell Emile Smith Rowe could be a missed opportunity.

Petit noted the team’s struggle in keeping pace with Manchester City, especially after the 2-2 draw with Liverpool last Sunday. With crucial matches against Newcastle and Chelsea approaching, the Gunners find themselves five points adrift, and Petit believes the absence of Martin Odegaard has further hampered Arsenal’s midfield dynamics.

Despite the summer addition of Mikel Merino, Petit expressed disappointment, noting that neither Declan Rice nor Leandro Trossard could effectively orchestrate plays in the absence of Odegaard. He highlighted Smith Rowe, now at Fulham, as a potential solution Arsenal no longer has. Watching Arsenal alongside William Gallas, Petit observed that injuries to key players often destabilize the team, unlike at clubs such as Manchester City or Liverpool.

Arsenal face Preston in the Carabao Cup tonight, and fans hope to see young talents like Ethan Nwaneri gain playing time. Petit believes this match presents an ideal opportunity to rest senior players while allowing youth prospects to step up in the absence of experienced midfielders.
