Real Sociedad’s director of football, Roberto Olabe, remains confident that Martin Zubimendi will stay at the club through January, despite increasing Premier League interest and the midfielder’s release clause.
The 25-year-old turned down a summer transfer to Liverpool, opting to stay in Spain. However, Manchester City is now reportedly eyeing a move for Zubimendi as Pep Guardiola’s team struggles with Rodri’s absence due to a serious knee injury.
The reigning Premier League champions may look to the transfer market next month to strengthen their squad.
Despite City’s financial power, Olabe is not worried about losing Zubimendi in January. Speaking to Marca, he said: “There is little peace about the clauses, but Martín has shown that his will is above any contractual terms. I don’t foresee any surprises this January.”
Zubimendi missed Real Sociedad’s recent loss to Celta Vigo, but Olabe explained this was due to fitness concerns rather than transfer-related issues.
“He’s been dealing with some discomfort for a while now,” Olabe stated. “It’s normal after so many games and competitions. The coach, medical staff, and Martín himself decided it was better for him to step aside for now.”
The midfielder, who has been the subject of speculation, remains unfazed by the rumors. Addressing his future, Zubimendi recently commented, “There will always be rumors, especially as January approaches, but I don’t let outside noise distract me. I’m happy with how I’m handling it and will continue to do so.”
While Zubimendi remains linked with Premier League clubs, his commitment to Real Sociedad suggests that a mid-season move is unlikely.
