The 42-year-old official was suspended on November 11 after a video surfaced in which he allegedly made derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, referring to him with an offensive term.
In addition to the comments, another video leak showed Coote apparently sniffing white powder from a rolled-up banknote.
Investigation and Sacking
PGMOL confirmed the termination of Coote’s employment after a thorough investigation into his actions. A statement released by the referees’ body described Coote’s behavior as a serious breach of the terms of his employment contract.
The conclusion of the investigation led to his dismissal, with the company deeming his position “untenable.”
The PGMOL expressed that while they are committed to supporting Coote’s welfare, the severity of his actions left them no choice but to terminate his contract. Coote has the right to appeal this decision.
The Fallout and Reactions
The incident has sparked significant reactions within the football community, particularly due to the involvement of a high-profile figure like Jurgen Klopp.
PGMOL’s decision to terminate Coote’s employment highlights the seriousness with which the organization views breaches of conduct, especially when involving derogatory remarks about individuals in the sport.
While the investigation into Coote’s actions is now complete, the incident has raised questions about the conduct of referees and officials off the pitch.
