Rangers legend Kris Boyd has urged the club to prioritize signing Manchester United defender Jonny Evans during the January transfer window.

The veteran center-back’s experience, Boyd believes, could provide much-needed stability as Rangers struggle to compete with Celtic, who are currently 14 points ahead in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers’ struggles were compounded by their penalty shootout loss to Celtic in last month’s League Cup final, which allowed their rivals to surpass them in total major trophies for the first time since the 1930s.

Boyd, who scored 101 goals in 143 league games for Rangers, criticized the team’s lack of leadership on and off the pitch. He emphasized the importance of experienced players to guide the team through challenging times.

The Need for Leadership at Rangers

Speaking to Sky Sports, Boyd highlighted the injuries and lack of direction plaguing Rangers’ backline. “They’re struggling with injuries, it’s a patchwork back-four,” Boyd noted. “I don’t see any leaders in there.”

He suggested Evans, a proven veteran with 42 appearances since rejoining Manchester United last year, as a potential short-term solution.

Boyd reflected on past signings like Ugo Ehiogu and Davie Weir, who brought professionalism and stability to the squad, not only on the pitch but also in daily training sessions.

Evans, he argued, could play a similar role for the current Rangers squad, especially given his availability this summer as his Manchester United contract nears its end.

Urgency to Act Before Celtic Extend Their Lead

Boyd also pointed out that Rangers’ inconsistency has left many players looking “lost.” Manager Philippe Clement has focused on developing young talents, but Boyd believes this strategy needs balancing with experienced signings to steady the ship.

With Celtic under Brendan Rodgers looking to extend their lead to 17 points in the upcoming derby, Boyd emphasized the need for immediate changes. “Something has to change because it has not been good enough for Rangers,” he concluded.
