Currently 14 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, Philippe Clement’s side faces a crucial Old Firm Derby on Thursday at Ibrox.
Adding to their woes, Rangers lost to Celtic on penalties in last month’s League Cup final, marking the first time since the 1930s that Celtic has surpassed them in major trophies.
Boyd, who netted 101 goals in 143 league appearances for Rangers, expressed his concerns about the team’s lackluster form, stating that the squad is missing experienced leaders.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Boyd said, “Rangers are struggling with injuries, and the back-four is a patchwork. There’s a clear absence of leaders in the squad.”
The former Scotland striker believes 36-year-old Jonny Evans could be the answer. Evans, who has made 42 appearances since rejoining Manchester United, has seen limited game time under new manager Ruben Amorim.
With his contract set to expire this summer, Boyd suggests Rangers could benefit from Evans’ vast experience, even if it’s just for the remainder of the season.
Boyd compared the potential signing of Evans to past Rangers stalwarts like Ugo Ehiogu and Davie Weir, emphasizing their impact both on and off the pitch.
“These players brought professionalism and leadership daily. Someone like Jonny Evans could do the same, guiding younger players and stabilizing the team,” Boyd explained.
Clement has discussed developing young talent at Rangers, but Boyd believes a mix of experienced players is essential to steady the squad.
“There are boys who look lost on the pitch and at the training ground. Something has to change because this isn’t good enough for Rangers,” he added.
A win for Celtic on Thursday would extend their lead to 17 points at the top of the table as they chase a fourth consecutive league title under Brendan Rodgers.
