Amid United’s turbulent season—which has already cost Erik ten Hag his managerial role—some supporters questioned the wisdom of high-profile leisure trips, with Gary Neville suggesting that the timing might have been inappropriate.
Speaking on The Overlap US, Neville acknowledged the pressures faced by high-profile players like Rashford but felt their choice to travel across the Atlantic raised concerns.
“It’s been a tough time for the club and for Rashford,” Neville said. “When things aren’t going well, you have to go that extra mile to perfect every detail—your diet, rest, training, even mental preparation.”
The former United defender added that while he doesn’t begrudge players enjoying time off, a long-haul trip could have physical and mental repercussions, especially given the current scrutiny on United’s poor form.
“I wouldn’t be flying 10 hours to a different time zone when my team is under fire. Some players have gone away quietly to rest, and they’re the clever ones in my book,” Neville concluded.
Jamie Carragher, however, took a more lenient view, defending players’ rights to use their time off as they see fit.
“Players always get a few days off during international breaks,” Carragher explained. “The way they travel—often by private jet—makes it easier. It’s not a big deal to go to New York for a few days.”
Carragher emphasized the importance of mental relaxation, especially during a grueling season. “Getting away can help clear your head. I see no issue with it,” he said.
Rashford was pictured courtside near actor Ben Stiller, while Casemiro watched from the stands with his wife, Anna Mariana. The images quickly went viral, splitting fan opinion.
Some argued that players should focus on regaining form amid United’s struggles, particularly with the team languishing in 13th place in the Premier League. Others felt the backlash was overblown, noting the players’ right to personal time during a break.
United’s challenging start to the season has put players under intense scrutiny. With new head coach Ruben Amorim preparing to take the reins, the spotlight is firmly on the squad’s commitment and professionalism.
Neville’s critique reflects the pressure on senior players like Rashford and Casemiro to set an example during a period of rebuilding. However, Carragher’s more relaxed perspective highlights the need for balance in a relentless football calendar.
As United resumes their campaign, the focus will inevitably shift back to performances on the pitch. Whether the downtime in New York proves beneficial or a distraction remains to be seen.
