Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to face off in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, marking the 259th edition of the iconic El Clasico.
Unlike traditional “super cup” competitions, Spain’s version includes four teams: the La Liga champions, runners-up, and the Copa del Rey finalists from the previous season.
In the semi-finals, Barcelona defeated Atletico Bilbao, while Real Madrid overcame Mallorca to set up this blockbuster clash. Currently leading La Liga, Los Blancos hold a five-point advantage over Barcelona, who sit in third place. However, Barca claimed a resounding 4-0 victory in their last encounter.
The final will take place at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Saudi Arabia, with kick-off scheduled for 7 PM UK time on Sunday, January 12. If the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the winner will be decided via penalties.
Unfortunately, UK fans won’t be able to watch the game on TV or online as no British broadcaster picked up the Spanish Super Cup. However, viewers in Spain can catch the action live on Movistar Plus.
Team Updates
Real Madrid will be without captain Luka Modric due to illness, along with injured defenders Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal.
On a positive note, David Alaba returns to training after his ACL recovery, Jude Bellingham is fit to play, and Vinicius Jr is cleared to feature despite a two-match La Liga ban.
For Barcelona, Dani Olmo has been granted a temporary pass to play despite registration issues, while injuries rule out Marc Bernal, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Hector Fort, and Andreas Christensen. Meanwhile, Ronald Araujo’s availability remains uncertain amid rumors linking him to Arsenal.
