Real Madrid are reportedly targeting William Saliba as their top defensive option in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to The Athletic. The Spanish and European champions are keen to strengthen their backline after struggling with injuries and a lack of depth in defence this season.
Saliba, who has been an instrumental figure in Arsenal’s Premier League title challenges, has been in outstanding form alongside Gabriel Magalhães, forming one of the top centre-back partnerships in Europe. Real Madrid are said to have maintained a positive relationship with Saliba’s entourage in anticipation of a potential summer move.
With key defensive players sidelined and a lack of signings, Real Madrid have been left somewhat exposed at the back. As a result, they are exploring several centre-back options for the 2024-25 season. However, Saliba is reportedly at the top of their list.
Saliba, 24, has played 125 games for Arsenal since joining from Saint-Étienne in 2019 and has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. His commanding performances were key in Arsenal’s 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg victory over Real Madrid this week, where he helped secure a clean sheet.
Saliba is under contract with Arsenal until 2027, after agreeing a new deal two years ago. His consistent performances earned him a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for both 2023 and 2024, and he has been a crucial part of Mikel Arteta’s defence.
Despite this, reports suggest that Real Madrid are closely monitoring Saliba’s situation. If the Frenchman’s price is deemed too high this summer, the Spanish giants may wait until 2026, when Saliba has just one year left on his contract, or even try to sign him on a free transfer the following year.
While Saliba remains Real Madrid’s primary defensive target, the club is also exploring other options, including AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen. However, reports indicate that Real Madrid are reluctant to meet Huijsen’s £50m release clause, and he may instead be courted by Premier League sides such as Liverpool.
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola addressed the speculation surrounding Huijsen’s future, saying:
“My only concern with Dean is that he keeps his focus here. He trains very well, he’s very focused on improving individually and improving the team collectively.”
With a number of potential targets on their radar, Real Madrid’s defensive overhaul will be one of the key storylines of the upcoming transfer window.
