Trent Alexander-Arnold is rumored to be on the verge of joining Real Madrid this summer, marking a significant move for the England star.
The 26-year-old Liverpool defender, who has spent his entire career at Anfield with over 300 appearances and major trophies like the Premier League and Champions League under his belt, is nearing the end of his contract.
Talks about a renewal have stalled, paving the way for Madrid to prepare a massive deal for his services.
The La Liga giants even attempted a January bid for Alexander-Arnold, but Liverpool swiftly rejected it. Now, Madrid has been advised to consider another Liverpool star—club captain Virgil van Dijk.
Like Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk’s contract will expire this summer. Former footballer Tony Cascarino believes signing both would be a smart move, calling it a “no-brainer” for Madrid.
Cascarino told The Times, “Real Madrid should absolutely sign Virgil van Dijk along with Trent Alexander-Arnold. They need a high-caliber center-back, and Van Dijk is among the world’s best. At 33, he still has several years of elite performance left. Ancelotti thrives with experienced players, and Van Dijk fits the bill.”
Real Madrid has successfully secured high-profile free agents in recent years, including Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba, and could replicate this strategy.
Cascarino added, “Their history is unmatched, and Van Dijk could find new motivation in Madrid. Pairing him with Rudiger would solidify their defense for years.”
Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool in a record-breaking £75m deal in 2018, is set to make his 300th appearance for the club this weekend.
Liverpool currently boasts the Premier League’s best defensive record, conceding just 20 goals in 21 games.
As Liverpool prepares to face Ipswich Town on Saturday, Real Madrid’s interest in their two defensive stalwarts adds intrigue to a season where transfer rumors are already heating up.
