Carlo Ancelotti expressed deep disappointment following Real Madrid’s crushing 5-2 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Despite Kylian Mbappe’s stunning solo goal just five minutes into the match, Real Madrid trailed 4-1 by halftime as Barcelona dominated.
First-half goals from Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Alejandro Balde left the Champions League holders shell-shocked.
Raphinha added another goal after the break, and Real Madrid faced further struggles after Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for a foul on Mbappe outside the box.
Despite pulling one back, Madrid could not mount a comeback as Barcelona claimed their 15th Super Cup title.
Ancelotti, visibly disheartened, admitted that only Mbappe performed up to standard. “We didn’t defend well. Barcelona scored too easily, and we failed both collectively and individually,” he said.
He added, “The team wasn’t compact, and while Mbappe shone, the rest of the game is best forgotten. We must regroup and move forward.”
Veteran Luka Modric acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, offering an apology to fans. “Losing hurts, but we have to stay united.
There’s a long season ahead,” he said. He praised Barcelona, admitting they were the better side on the night.
Barcelona’s manager Hansi Flick celebrated the victory, calling his team’s display “unbelievable.” Captain Raphinha echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the team’s belief in their ability to compete and win titles. The victory underscored Barcelona’s dominance and left Real Madrid searching for answers.
