Rio Ferdinand has suggested that newly appointed Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim may go all out to secure Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, potentially reshaping United’s forward lineup.

The former United player believes Amorim, who officially joins the club on November 11, could make Gyokeres one of his top targets to help solve United’s scoring issues, which have plagued the team this season.

Currently, United ranks near the bottom of the Premier League in goals scored, whereas Amorim’s Sporting has netted 30 goals in nine matches, led by the prolific Gyokeres.

The Swedish international has been in exceptional form, scoring 16 times in 15 appearances this season. He delivered an impressive 43 goals in 50 games in his debut season at Sporting, having joined from Coventry City in 2023.

Arsenal is among several clubs interested in Gyokeres, but Ferdinand believes that Amorim’s connection with the striker could bring him to Old Trafford.

“Gyokeres has been transformative under Amorim,” Ferdinand shared on his show Rio Reacts. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Amorim sees him as essential and prioritizes him.”

However, bringing Gyokeres to United could raise questions about Rasmus Hojlund’s role. Hojlund, signed from Atalanta in 2023 for a deal potentially worth £72 million, has been United’s main striking option and recently returned from a hamstring injury.

If Gyokeres joins, it would mean tough competition for Hojlund, who has netted twice this season.

Amorim, widely regarded as one of Europe’s promising young coaches, arrives at a crucial time as United seek to revitalize their season. Ferdinand further commented that Amorim’s appointment is a significant move for United, given the coach’s popularity among top European clubs.
