Rio Ferdinand was impressed by Chido Obi-Martin’s brief but promising display in Manchester United’s FA Cup loss to Fulham. However, he believes the excitement around the 17-year-old was largely due to Rasmus Hojlund’s continued struggles. Obi-Martin replaced Hojlund in the second half and showcased glimpses of talent, though United ultimately crashed out on penalties.
Having joined United from Arsenal last summer, Obi-Martin has been making waves in the U18s, earning a spot in the senior matchday squad. While Ferdinand sees potential in the youngster, he admits the primary reason fans were eager to see him play was Hojlund’s disappointing form. The Danish striker, signed for £72m in 2023, has managed just two Premier League goals this season.
Ferdinand didn’t hold back in his criticism of United’s attack while speaking on his YouTube channel. “This team can’t create chances, they can’t score goals. It’s a joke,” he said. “Because Hojlund has been so off it and so bad recently, everyone got excited when Obi-Martin came on. It was refreshing.”

He also pointed out Hojlund’s lack of confidence, contrasting it with Obi-Martin’s sharp instincts. “Chido is still rough around the edges, but he will get chances,” Ferdinand continued. “I watched him play against my two boys, and what he did against Fulham was exactly the same. The ball falls, and he’s there.”
Former United striker Andy Cole also shared his thoughts on Hojlund’s struggles, acknowledging the difficulties he faces. “It’s been really tough for him, especially as a young player at United,” Cole told OLBG. “They’re not creating chances, not scoring goals, and he has no experienced forwards to guide him through it.”
Despite Hojlund’s poor form, Cole commended his work ethic. “He works his socks off and never gives up. Sometimes, you just need that little bit of luck. Hopefully, he’ll get that soon,” he added.

United’s FA Cup exit means their last chance at silverware this season lies in the Europa League. Ruben Amorim’s side will face Real Sociedad in the first leg of their last-16 clash on Thursday.
With Sociedad sitting ninth in La Liga and United struggling in 14th in the Premier League, the Red Devils desperately need their attacking players to step up as the season reaches a critical juncture.
