Rio Ferdinand has expressed concern over Manchester United’s potential transfer dealings under Ruben Amorim, particularly the decision to sell Alejandro Garnacho.
The club’s focus this January has been on outgoings rather than new signings, with Antony heading to Real Betis on loan and several others linked with moves away.
Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, both sidelined by Amorim since his arrival in November, are expected to draw late-window interest.
Meanwhile, United are pursuing Lecce’s Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu and have reportedly shown interest in Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.
The possible departure of Garnacho, however, has sparked criticism from Ferdinand. The 20-year-old academy graduate, who has already surpassed 100 appearances for United, has remained a key contributor amid ongoing speculation. He played 81 minutes in the club’s recent 1-0 win over Fulham.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the victory, Ferdinand said: “I can’t understand why Garnacho would be allowed to leave. Where’s the creativity coming from in this team without him? He may not fit Amorim’s preferred profile, but he always finds a way to make an impact. Selling homegrown talent due to financial pressures shouldn’t be an option for a club like Manchester United.”
Ferdinand also called for improvement in United’s attacking output, saying Amorim must find ways to maximize the potential of his forwards.
Despite the win at Fulham, Amorim acknowledged the team’s struggles. “It wasn’t our best performance, but getting the three points is crucial,” he said. “We’ve had some bad luck recently, but I have a clear vision of how I want us to play, and we’ll evolve toward that style.”
United’s inconsistent season sees them sitting 12th in the Premier League table, with fans and pundits alike questioning Amorim’s decision-making as the transfer deadline looms.
