Roy Keane did not hold back in his criticism of Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho after the young winger chose not to celebrate his goal during United’s 3-0 win over Leicester City.

Keane expressed disappointment in Garnacho’s decision to remain subdued in front of fans at Old Trafford, implying that if he could not enjoy scoring, then perhaps he should “get a job somewhere else.”

Garnacho’s muted response seemed to stem from a recent exchange with a fan who had criticized his performance after United’s previous 2-0 Europa League victory over PAOK.

The fan had told Garnacho to “pass better” and “work on his first touch.” Garnacho, who continued signing autographs despite the comment, responded to the fan by asking, “Why are you not playing, man?”

In his latest commentary, Keane stressed that nothing should come between a player and their joy of scoring a goal, especially considering the sacrifices fans make to support their team.

Speaking on The Overlap’s ‘Stick to Football,’ Keane said, “Whatever is going on off the pitch, scoring a goal should bring you joy. Fans travel and spend their hard-earned money to see players score and celebrate those moments. If he’s playing and can’t celebrate, then he should find a different line of work.”

Keane elaborated, suggesting that young players need to appreciate the opportunities they have. “People make sacrifices to watch Man United, so if a young player can’t enjoy scoring, he needs to get a job somewhere else. In any job, people will critique you; if he’s this sensitive, then football may not be for him,” Keane concluded.

United’s captain Bruno Fernandes also shared thoughts on Garnacho’s reaction, urging him to focus on the fans who support him.

“Garnacho scored a brilliant goal, but he didn’t celebrate because he feels some fans have lost faith in him. I reminded him that there will always be critics, but many people appreciate his talent,” Fernandes commented.

Keane’s words reflect a growing concern over how young players manage their relationship with fans and deal with criticism in high-pressure environments.

As Manchester United faces a tough season, Keane and Fernandes both believe that players like Garnacho must rise above distractions and honor the supporters who fuel their success.
