Amorim inherits a squad built under Erik ten Hag but has been cautioned about operating with a limited transfer budget.

As a result, United’s transfer chiefs, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox, are targeting cost-effective options, with Gomes identified as a potential bargain addition to strengthen the midfield.

Amorim holds long-standing admiration for the 24-year-old, whose performances at Lille have earned him recognition in the senior England squad. Gomes spent a season on loan at Boavista, during which he likely caught Amorim’s attention.

In an interview last month, Gomes acknowledged the emotional pull of a return to Old Trafford, saying, “There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course, it’d be difficult to say no.”

Gomes first joined Manchester United at the age of six and quickly rose through the academy ranks.

He made his senior debut at 16, replacing Wayne Rooney against Crystal Palace in 2017, becoming the youngest player to feature for United since Duncan Edwards.

However, after only nine more appearances, he left for Lille four years ago in search of development opportunities.

Reflecting on his departure, Gomes stated, “Leaving [Manchester United] was about bettering myself as a player and a person. It was tough leaving a club I’d been with since I was six, but I knew it was the right move.”

Now thriving at Lille, Gomes’ growth and experience make him an appealing option for Amorim as United looks to bolster their squad within budget constraints.
