Viktor Gyokeres delivered a stunning hat-trick in Sporting CP’s 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City, leaving his manager Ruben Amorim encouraging him to stay at Sporting despite increasing links to Manchester United.

Amorim, who will take over as United’s head coach next week, was asked if he intends to bring Gyokeres with him to Old Trafford.
However, the manager, set to leave Sporting after this weekend’s league game, was quick to deflect.
Amorim, who has led Sporting to numerous wins with Gyokeres shining in his role, downplayed the transfer talk, urging the Swedish striker to finish the season with Sporting. “I just made peace with the Sporting fans.
Gyokeres is a Sporting player—a great club, he’s done a lot here, and he should finish the season strong with us,” Amorim remarked.
Gyokeres, who’s enjoyed a prolific run with 66 goals in just 67 games for Sporting since joining from Coventry City in 2023, has been rumored to follow Amorim to United.
After the match, Gyokeres didn’t address the transfer speculation but shared his gratitude, saying, “We will miss [Amorim] and his staff a lot. We’ve achieved a lot together, but we have to focus on what’s ahead.”
Reflecting on his upcoming Premier League challenge, Amorim was cautious about the weight fans may place on the 4-1 win over City. “It’s a bit misleading.
It’s different in the Premier League—we’ll have to fight in new ways, but wins always make the transition easier.”
As he prepares for his final Sporting match against Braga this Sunday, Amorim left fans with a mix of gratitude and anticipation for what lies ahead in his new role at Old Trafford.
