Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly urged his club to join Chelsea in the race to sign Benfica’s highly-rated defender Tomás Araújo.

The 22-year-old has become a key figure in Benfica’s lineup and is now attracting significant interest from major European clubs.
Chelsea, who are said to be “in love” with Araújo’s talent, have already initiated talks with Benfica, but Amorim aims to make the Red Devils strong contenders for the Portuguese star.
United’s interest follows Araújo’s recent call-up to the Portugal national team and a series of impressive performances in both domestic and European competitions.
While Benfica values Araújo highly, with a €100m release clause in his contract, Manchester United are reportedly preparing to negotiate a potential £50m deal for the January transfer window.
Chelsea’s previous attempts to sign the defender fell through last summer, leaving the door open for United to make a decisive move.
Araújo’s Growing Reputation
Araújo’s rise through Benfica’s academy has been remarkable, with the young defender now boasting 37 first-team appearances. His ability to read the game, combined with composure under pressure, has earned him comparisons to some of Europe’s top center-backs.
Former teammate Jan Vertonghen praised Araújo, stating he has the potential to become one of the world’s best defenders within a few years. Araújo’s contributions also helped Benfica secure the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira title in 2023.
United’s Transfer Plans
Under Amorim’s leadership, Manchester United are looking to revamp their squad, with the addition of a top-tier defender like Araújo being a priority. Alongside defensive reinforcements, United are also scouting for a new striker and left-back ahead of the January transfer window. Araújo’s signing would not only bolster United’s defensive options but also signal their intent to compete at the highest level under their new manager.
