Incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly eager to strengthen the squad by signing one of his current Sporting Lisbon stars, 20-year-old defender Ousmane Diomande.

Known for his solid performances under Amorim at Sporting, Diomande has quickly gained a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young defensive talents.
Having helped Sporting clinch the Primeira Liga title last season and contributed to Ivory Coast’s victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the young centre-back is being closely watched by several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle.
With Manchester United looking to transition to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, a strong defense will be essential. Although United’s roster includes Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, and young talent Leny Yoro, doubts remain.
Martinez has been plagued by fitness issues, De Ligt’s form and speed have been questioned, and Yoro, at only 18, lacks top-level experience. Additionally, with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans entering their 30s, United may need fresh talent to rejuvenate the backline.
Diomande has an impressive record, conceding just three goals in nine league matches this season, a statistic that highlights his potential as a defensive mainstay. However, signing him would require United to activate his £70 million release clause.
This price could make United cautious, as past investments in high-priced players have not always delivered expected results. Despite these reservations, Diomande’s popularity across Europe underscores his value, with top clubs keenly watching his progress.
Amorim’s official role with United begins on November 11, and his first match as manager will be an away fixture against Ipswich on November 24. The addition of Diomande could provide a fresh edge to United’s defense and potentially aid in establishing Amorim’s tactical style at Old Trafford.
