Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, has shared his vision for turning things around at Old Trafford, with a clear focus on possession and cohesion.

The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, who recently replaced Erik ten Hag, is gearing up for his first match in charge against Ipswich in the Premier League this Sunday.

While Amorim acknowledges Ten Hag’s impressive track record at Ajax, he also highlighted the critical issues that plagued United during the Dutchman’s tenure—particularly their struggle to retain possession.

A Nod to Ten Hag’s Success

Amorim was quick to recognize Ten Hag’s accomplishments before his time at United. Speaking in an interview with Gary Neville for Sky Sports, Amorim said:
“Erik was amazing at Ajax. For me, he built the best two teams outside the five strongest leagues.”

Despite the praise, Amorim is clear that his approach will be different. He emphasized the importance of having a unified playing style, where every player knows their role in any given situation.

One Idea, One Identity

Amorim’s philosophy revolves around simplicity and clarity. He explained:
“When the ball is in one place, whether we have it or not, every player must understand what to do. If someone receives the ball between the lines and turns, everyone should know the next step.”

By fostering a shared understanding of the game, Amorim hopes to build a cohesive unit that moves in sync, creating a seamless and effective playing style.

The Problem: Losing the Ball Too Quickly

The new boss identified a recurring issue under Ten Hag: United’s tendency to lose possession too easily. This flaw, Amorim says, has a ripple effect on the team’s ability to press high and control the game.

“The problem is with the ball,” Amorim said.
“We lose the ball too fast. You cannot press high all the time. To press better, you must keep the ball and be in position to start a play.”

He believes improving ball retention will address several interconnected problems, allowing United to push higher, press more effectively, and control the tempo of matches.

A Strategic Overhaul

Amorim’s focus this week has been on refining these aspects. He describes it as a “snowball effect,” where improved ball retention leads to better positioning, which in turn enables higher pressing.

“If we don’t lose the ball, we can push higher. If we’re higher, we press better. Everything is connected,” he explained.

A New Chapter for Manchester United

Amorim’s arrival marks a fresh chapter for Manchester United, with fans hoping that his strategic clarity and emphasis on unity will reinvigorate the squad. His previous success at Sporting Lisbon, where he guided the team to two league titles, proves he has the tactical acumen to deliver results.

As United prepares for their clash with Ipswich, all eyes will be on Amorim to see if he can execute his vision and bring much-needed stability to Old Trafford. Will his “one idea, one identity” approach be the key to unlocking United’s potential?

Stay tuned as the Amorim era begins at Manchester United.
