The Real Sociedad striker expressed his concerns following Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Rwanda in the final group stage match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers held in Uyo.
Speaking to OmaSports TV, Umar shared his disappointment with the harsh treatment players receive from fans, which he believes could discourage them from representing the national team.
“If things continue like this, many players will start avoiding playing for the Super Eagles,” Umar warned. “When we come to play here, it’s not about money; it’s about love. You want to feel at home, but instead, you’re made to feel unwelcome.”

He compared the experience to playing in Europe, saying, “When you go to Europe to play, you’re loved and supported there. But when you come to your country, your people question your presence, even telling you to return to Europe.”
Umar further reflected on how perceptions have shifted over time. “Back in the day, we were warned to be careful of how we’d be treated in Europe, but now it’s our own people who are tearing us apart.”
Highlighting the impact of fan criticism, particularly on social media, Umar revealed how it affects the players’ morale.
“Some of my teammates feel crushed after every game because of what fans say about them online. Even if you avoid reading the comments, your name still gets mentioned, and it hurts.”
He emphasized the importance of mental toughness in modern football. “Football today is a mental game. If you’re not mentally strong, you cannot play at this level,” Umar concluded.
Umar’s remarks serve as a call for Nigerian fans to rally behind the Super Eagles, reminding them that support and encouragement are crucial to the team’s success.
