Sir Alex Ferguson has seen it all when it comes to football training, but when asked to name the worst pre-season trainer he ever managed, the legendary Manchester United boss didn’t hesitate—Brian McClair.
Despite his poor training performances, McClair enjoyed an 11-year career at Old Trafford, winning 14 major trophies. Ferguson, who led United to unprecedented success over his 26-year reign, was known for his high standards. He had no patience for slackers, and many players, including stars like David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, experienced his infamous “hairdryer treatment” when they failed to meet expectations.

During a conversation with United’s academy players, Ferguson emphasized that anyone with bad training habits wouldn’t have lasted long under his rule.
“They were all good. If they were a bad trainer, they wouldn’t have been there long!” Ferguson said. “But in pre-season, the worst trainer, without doubt, was Brian McClair. He was always last. But put him on the pitch on Saturday, and he would run all day!”
Ferguson stressed that dedication and self-discipline are key to success in football.
“Any player that wants to be good… look after yourself, sacrifice, and practice.”
Ferguson’s comments come as he prepares to briefly step out of retirement next month. The 83-year-old will return to the touchline as a manager for Giuseppe Rossi’s farewell match.

Rossi, a former United and Italy forward, expressed his gratitude for Ferguson’s involvement.
“I am very proud to say that my first professional coach, Sir Alex Ferguson, will be there,” Rossi said. “He immediately said yes when we called him, which shows the kind of person he is.
Whether you’re someone like me who played only a handful of games or Cristiano Ronaldo, he treats everyone the same. I have great respect for him.”

United fans will no doubt relish seeing Ferguson back in the dugout, even if only for one special occasion.
