Sir Alex Ferguson has shared that his decision to step down as Manchester United manager in 2013 was motivated by the need to support his wife, Cathy, after the death of her sister.

Ferguson ended his legendary 26-year reign at Old Trafford having won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies. His final act as manager was guiding United to their last Premier League title in 2013, but the decision to retire had been made earlier that Christmas.

The 82-year-old, now removed from his role as a club ambassador by Manchester United’s new owners, spoke to Ally McCoist on a TNT Sports podcast about his reasons for retiring. He explained that Cathy was struggling after her sister’s passing, and he knew she needed his support.

“She had given her life to me, taking care of the family while I was managing. When I told her I was going to retire, she was delighted,” Ferguson said.

The former United boss also reflected on his successful final season and the influence of star player Robin van Persie in securing the league title.

Ferguson’s departure as a club director has sparked criticism from fans and former players alike. Rio Ferdinand commented, “If Sir Alex can be taken out, then no one is safe at Manchester United.” Eric Cantona added, “Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to do anything he wants at the club until the day he dies.”

United continue to struggle in the Premier League, sitting five points above the relegation zone as they prepare to face Brentford. Erik ten Hag’s position remains under scrutiny amidst United’s ongoing troubles.
