Sol Campbell, one of the rare players to switch between bitter North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, has described the backlash he faced as “horrendous.”

A Spurs academy graduate and fan favorite, Campbell spent over a decade at Tottenham, making over 300 appearances and winning the League Cup in 1999.

However, in 2001, he made the bold decision to join Arsenal on a free transfer, seeking new challenges under Arsène Wenger.

The move enraged Tottenham fans, especially after Campbell had publicly committed to staying at the club. The fallout was immense, with fans labeling him a traitor.

Despite this, Campbell thrived at Arsenal, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups. He was a key player in the Invincibles squad and even scored in the 2006 Champions League final against Barcelona, though Arsenal lost 2-1.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Campbell defended his decision, saying: “I wanted to win titles and see how far I could push myself in football.

At Tottenham, we didn’t have the depth to compete at the highest level. Arsenal offered a world-class squad, top facilities, and a legendary manager. It was an environment built for success.”

Campbell admitted the abuse he faced was extreme, calling it “more than toxic” and likening the experience to something out of a movie.

“It required incredible strength to endure. If people looked back, they’d see just how bad it was. No one has ever apologized,” he shared.

He also questioned whether racial bias contributed to the vitriol he faced. “Others have made similar moves, like Luis Figo in Spain, but they didn’t face the same level of hostility. Is it a racial thing? Why aren’t they singing songs about other players who switched clubs?”

As another North London Derby approaches, with Tottenham visiting Arsenal at the Emirates, the historic rivalry remains intense.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, currently under pressure after falling behind Liverpool in the Premier League and being eliminated from the FA Cup, will look to assert dominance over a struggling Tottenham side under Ange Postecoglou.

Despite the controversy, Campbell’s decision ultimately defined his career, cementing his legacy as one of Arsenal’s most celebrated defenders.
