Russell Martin has been dismissed as Southampton manager just hours after his side suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The result, which saw Spurs score four goals within 25 minutes, leaves Southampton bottom of the Premier League table with a dismal five points from 16 matches.

Southampton’s woeful campaign under Martin has seen them secure only one league win this season, scoring just 11 goals while conceding a staggering 36.

The heavy loss to Spurs proved to be the final straw for the club’s board, who have placed Under-21 manager Simon Rusk in interim charge while they search for a permanent successor.

In a statement released late Sunday night, the club expressed gratitude to Martin for his efforts but emphasized the need for improved results.

“We all knew the challenges of readjusting to life in the top flight,” the statement read. “However, the reality of our situation is clear… We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve.”

The club also praised its fans and the development of Academy talent, calling it a “source of strength” during difficult times.

Martin, who took over in June 2023 and guided Southampton to promotion via the Championship play-offs, admitted to his side’s struggles following the defeat.

Speaking before his dismissal, he told TNT Sports: “We have no choice but to keep working and fighting… It’s what I have been doing in this job and will continue doing until I’m told not to.”

Reflecting on the disastrous first half against Tottenham, Martin didn’t hold back: “We didn’t respond very well to the setbacks as a group… I didn’t recognise our team in the first half.”

The Southampton faithful made their frustrations clear, with boos echoing around the stadium and a banner calling for Martin to leave.

When asked about the reaction, Martin admitted it stung but understood the anger. “It hurts me as a manager, but I know it’s not personal,” he said.

Despite moments of promise under Martin, Southampton’s return to the Premier League has highlighted a significant gap between the top flight and the Championship.

With just five points on the board and relegation looming, Southampton’s next appointment will be crucial to salvaging their season.
