Tottenham Hotspur have made a decisive move to sign Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel, pulling ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
The 19-year-old is eager to secure more playing time and has informed Bayern of his desire to leave before the January transfer window closes.
Tel, who has struggled for minutes this season, started just his third match on Wednesday in Bayern’s 3-1 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava. His limited opportunities have attracted interest from multiple English clubs, but Spurs appear to be making the strongest push.
According to L’Equipe, Tottenham’s technical director Johan Lange traveled to Germany for direct negotiations with Bayern, aiming to persuade Tel to join Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
While the French winger has yet to finalize his decision, reports suggest he is reluctant to move to Chelsea due to the intense competition for a starting spot under Enzo Maresca.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that Tel has reconsidered his future. “In December, Mathys was determined to stay and fight for his place.
Now, he’s open to new opportunities,” Eberl revealed. “His playing time hasn’t been ideal, and we need to evaluate what’s best for him and for Bayern.”
Eberl also admitted that Bayern are considering both loan and permanent transfer options. “It’s rare to have this level of interest in a player,” he added.
Bayern captain Manuel Neuer weighed in on the situation, acknowledging the need for young players to gain regular minutes. “Match practice is crucial for his development,” Neuer said. “He hasn’t had enough of that here, so maybe a move makes sense.”
With the transfer deadline approaching, Tottenham are leading the charge, but Tel’s future remains undecided.
