Steven Gerrard’s managerial future is once again in the spotlight after his exit from Al-Ettifaq, sparking rumors of a dramatic return to Rangers.
The 44-year-old, who famously led the Scottish club to an unbeaten title-winning season in 2021, has been backed for a comeback by football legends Ally McCoist and Neil Lennon.
Gerrard’s time in Saudi Arabia ended in disappointment, as Al-Ettifaq managed just five wins in 17 league games, slipping dangerously close to the relegation zone. Despite being under contract until 2027, he agreed to leave after 18 months.
This follows an underwhelming spell at Aston Villa, where he lasted less than a year before being sacked.

McCoist believes the Rangers fanbase still holds Gerrard in high regard and wouldn’t be shocked if he returned. Speaking to talkSPORT BET, he pointed out that Gerrard’s next move will be crucial to reviving his managerial career.
Lennon echoed similar thoughts, acknowledging that while current Rangers boss Philippe Clement is making progress, Gerrard’s return cannot be ruled out in the future.
Rangers, currently 13 points behind league leaders Celtic, have at least secured Europa League knockout football, offering some hope in an otherwise challenging season.
