At the time, Ferguson was building a football dynasty at Old Trafford, having secured the first of his 13 Premier League titles in 1993. Meanwhile, Davids was at the peak of his powers, a star in Ajax’s golden era, where he won three Eredivisie titles and the Champions League.

His dreadlocked hair and iconic goggles made him one of the most recognizable players of the 1990s, known for his dominating presence on the field.

Davids recalled meeting Ferguson as a career highlight. “It was one of the most unbelievable experiences I had in my whole career,” he told BetMGM. “Sir Alex was funny, charming, and intelligent—everything you could want in a manager.”

Despite Ferguson’s efforts, Davids opted for a move to Serie A, joining AC Milan in 1996. “At that time, Serie A was home to the biggest teams, and that’s where I wanted to be,” Davids explained.

“I don’t regret not joining Manchester United. Sir Alex and I laughed about it later, and there are no hard feelings.”

Davids’ spell at Milan was marred by a serious leg injury, but he bounced back at Juventus, where he spent seven successful years, winning three Serie A titles.

Later, he played for Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Tottenham before retiring in 2010 with 74 caps for the Netherlands.

Towards the end of his illustrious career, Davids received recognition from Brazilian legend Pele, who included him among FIFA’s 125 greatest living footballers. Despite never playing under Ferguson, Davids carved out a legacy that cemented his place as one of football’s all-time greats.
