Amorim’s Tactical Shake-Up

In his first game in charge, Ruben Amorim implemented significant tactical adjustments, including a 3-4-3 formation.

Amad Diallo was positioned as a right wing-back, Jonny Evans operated on the left of the back three, while Alejandro Garnacho played a tucked-in role behind Marcus Rashford.

Despite these changes, United managed only a 1-1 draw against Ipswich, with midfielders Christian Eriksen and Casemiro struggling to meet Amorim’s high-pressing demands, leading to substitutions for Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount.

Neville’s Key Predictions

Gary Neville identified Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo as “certainties” for success in Amorim’s system. Ugarte, who played under Amorim at Sporting, brings familiarity with the coach’s style, while Neville highlighted Mainoo’s potential in midfield.

He also emphasized Luke Shaw’s importance, particularly in a back three, due to his versatility in transitioning to left-back. Neville sees Leny Yoro emerging as a pivotal figure on the right of the back three, thanks to his energy and pace.

Adapting the Attacking Line-Up

Neville pointed out the complexity of accommodating attacking talents like Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, and Amad Diallo within the new system. The 3-4-3 formation’s reliance on wing-backs and adaptable attackers poses challenges in ensuring balance and effectiveness.

Neville suggested that while Amad and Garnacho showed promise, the integration of forwards such as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee remains a puzzle Amorim must solve.
