Thomas Tuchel, the former Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain boss, has reached an agreement to become England’s next permanent manager, but not before Manchester United made it clear that he was their top choice if they decided to part ways with current manager Erik ten Hag.
Reports have emerged that Manchester United held talks with Tuchel over the summer about potentially taking over the managerial role at Old Trafford. However, no agreement was reached, and the club opted to extend Erik ten Hag’s contract instead. This decision has come under scrutiny, as United have struggled this season, with just two wins in their first seven Premier League games, leaving them 14th in the table.
Despite this shaky start, United’s interest in Tuchel did not fade. According to *The Times*, the club informed the German coach in recent weeks that he remained their top target if ten Hag were to be replaced. However, Tuchel did not wait around for the Red Devils’ next move, as he accepted the Football Association’s offer to become the new England boss.
Tuchel’s appointment came as a surprise to many, with interim boss Lee Carsley, Eddie Howe, and even Pep Guardiola seen as more likely contenders to succeed Gareth Southgate. However, the 51-year-old will now take charge of the national team from January 2025 on an 18-month contract, reportedly worth £5 million a year, as he leads England into the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the USA, and Mexico.
Manchester United’s interest in Tuchel highlights their concerns over the team’s recent performances under ten Hag. Tuchel’s impressive résumé, including a Champions League win with Chelsea, made him a highly sought-after figure, with AC Milan also reportedly interested in his services before he chose to accept the England job.
While Manchester United’s managerial situation remains under the spotlight, Tuchel is now set to steer the Three Lions through a crucial period, as they aim for success in international tournaments.
