Jody Morris, who was assistant to Frank Lampard at Chelsea, remarked that Rudiger became one of Europe’s best defenders under Tuchel’s leadership at Stamford Bridge.
Rudiger joined Chelsea from Roma in 2017 but saw limited playtime under Lampard, often ranking behind Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen.
However, Tuchel’s arrival in January 2021 saw Rudiger quickly rise to prominence, playing a pivotal role in Chelsea’s Champions League victory just months later.
Morris believes Tuchel’s system, especially the switch to a three-center-back formation with wing-backs, allowed Rudiger to shine both defensively and in attacking moments.
According to Morris, Rudiger’s transformation highlights how certain players thrive under a manager’s specific approach.
With Tuchel bringing analytical insights and tactical shifts, Rudiger’s performances peaked, showcasing his abilities in ways that hadn’t been seen before or since.
