Tim Sherwood has admitted that Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez proved him wrong with an impressive performance in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Marc Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson sealed the win for Enzo Maresca’s side, keeping them just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
However, it was Sanchez’s crucial saves, particularly in the second half when Brentford pressed for an equalizer, that stood out.
The Spaniard has faced heavy scrutiny this season, with critics, including Sherwood, questioning his ability to lead Chelsea’s title charge.
However, speaking on Premier League Productions, the former Spurs boss acknowledged Sanchez’s quality:
“Sanchez stood up when he was needed today. I’ve been critical of him and said Chelsea needed a better goalkeeper to win the Premier League, but if he keeps performing like this, I’ll have to eat my words.”
Former goalkeeper Shay Given also praised Sanchez on Match of the Day 2, recognizing his key saves while admitting the 27-year-old has made mistakes earlier this season.
“He deserves credit. He’s made some great saves today, and they were match-defining.”
Enzo Maresca defended Sanchez, pointing out his consistency throughout the season. “Remember Bournemouth—he saved a penalty.
Against Aston Villa, he stopped Watkins one-on-one, and again tonight he made crucial saves. We are happy with Robert,” Maresca said.
Despite calls for summer signing Filip Jorgensen to get a chance, Maresca emphasized the importance of competition within the squad:
“Filip is doing great in the Conference League, and Robert is doing exactly what we expect—helping us win games.”
Chelsea now turn their focus to the Conference League clash against Shamrock Rovers on Thursday before a trip to Everton on Sunday.
A win at Goodison Park would see them temporarily top the table ahead of Liverpool’s match against Tottenham.
