Ange Postecoglou’s time as Tottenham manager appears precarious following a dramatic 3-2 loss to Everton in Sunday’s Premier League clash.
Under the guidance of returning boss David Moyes, Everton stunned Tottenham at Goodison Park with an electrifying first-half display.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Iliman Ndiaye each struck goals, while an own goal from Archie Gray sent the home crowd into rapturous celebrations.
Although Spurs mounted a late comeback with goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, the damage had already been done. This marks yet another poor result for Postecoglou, with Tottenham managing just five wins in their last 18 matches.
Sitting 15th in the league table, only eight points above the relegation zone, the prospect of European football next season seems increasingly unrealistic.
Postecoglou has brought Tottenham to the brink of the Carabao Cup final, carrying a one-goal lead into their semi-final second leg against Liverpool.
However, speculation is mounting that chairman Daniel Levy might make a managerial change before then.
Potential replacements include Kieran McKenna, the Ipswich Town boss who led his side to consecutive promotions into the Premier League.
Though Ipswich has struggled for points this season, McKenna’s attractive style of play has made him a target for top clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United.
A former assistant to José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, McKenna began his coaching journey in Tottenham’s academy.
Betfair Next Tottenham Manager Odds:
Edin Terzic – 9/2
Marco Silva – 11/2
Thomas Frank – 11/2
Andoni Iraola – 11/2
Kieran McKenna – 9/1
Eddie Howe – 14/1
Gareth Southgate – 14/1
Edin Terzic tops the list of favorites to succeed Postecoglou. The former Borussia Dortmund coach led his team to last season’s Champions League final but remains unemployed since his departure.
Other names in contention include Fulham’s Marco Silva, Brentford’s Thomas Frank, and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
Speaking after the Everton loss, a visibly disheartened Postecoglou acknowledged the challenges facing his depleted squad, saying:
“This isn’t about me. My focus is on the players and helping them navigate this tough period. We’re asking so much from young players, some as young as 17. It’s about supporting them as best we can.”
Tottenham will need a swift turnaround as they prepare for two critical matches: a Europa League tie against Hoffenheim on Thursday, followed by a Premier League fixture at home to Leicester City on Sunday. For Postecoglou, the pressure to deliver results has never been greater.
