Tottenham Hotspur have made a dramatic move to secure the signing of Kevin Danso, swooping in to hijack Wolves’ deal for the Lens center-back.
The 26-year-old Austrian defender was expected to complete a loan switch to Wolves after the Premier League side reached an agreement with Lens. However, in a surprise twist, Danso has now pulled out of the move, paving the way for Spurs to make their move.
Earlier this month, Lens turned down several offers from Wolves, including a £21 million bid, before finally agreeing to a short-term loan with no option to buy. Danso had previously come close to leaving the French club last summer, only for a transfer to Roma to collapse after he failed a medical.
Tottenham have been actively searching for defensive reinforcements ahead of the transfer window’s closing deadline.
They had initially reached a €30 million (£25 million) agreement with AC Milan for Fikayo Tomori, but the former Chelsea defender rejected the switch. Spurs also saw their £50.2 million bid for Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel turned down earlier this week.
Danso has made 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season but was absent from Lens’ last three matches, including their 2-0 victory over Montpellier on Friday night. With the clock ticking on the transfer window, Spurs are now accelerating their efforts to bring the Austrian international to North London.
