Michael Newberry, a talented Cliftonville footballer and former Newcastle United academy graduate, has tragically passed away at the age of 27. The heartbreaking announcement was made on Newberry’s 27th birthday by Cliftonville Football Club.

Born in Belfast and raised in Newcastle, Newberry represented Northern Ireland at the youth international level. After leaving Newcastle in 2018, the defender built his career abroad, making over 60 appearances for the Icelandic club Vikingur Olafsvik. He later returned closer to home, spending three years at Linfield before joining Cliftonville in January.
Cliftonville expressed their devastation in a statement, saying: “Our sincere condolences are extended to Michael’s family, friends, teammates, and supporters who will be deeply affected by this heartbreaking news. Rest in peace, Newbs.”
As a mark of respect, Monday’s matches in Northern Ireland involving Cliftonville and Linfield have been postponed. Cliftonville was set to face Dungannon Swifts, while Linfield was scheduled to play Larne.
Newberry had been regarded as a bright talent during his time in Newcastle’s academy, even earning the prestigious Wor Jockie award in 2016. His passing has left a profound impact on the footballing community.
