Lookman is among five nominees vying for the prestigious honor after an outstanding year for both club and country.

The 27-year-old winger showcased his brilliance during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals and providing one assist in seven appearances for Nigeria.

On the club front, Lookman made history by netting a hat-trick in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League final victory, further cementing his reputation as a top talent.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Troost-Ekong shared his admiration: “I’d say he’s arguably our best player and possibly the best player in Africa right now.

The [African Player of the Year] ceremony is coming up on December 16, and I’m confident he’ll take the award.”

Troost-Ekong also highlighted Lookman’s rising profile among Europe’s elite clubs. “This season, he’s been exceptional.

At AFCON, he was phenomenal, and his Europa League final hat-trick speaks volumes. If I were a top club, I’d be eager to sign him.”

Lookman’s achievements have solidified his place as one of Africa’s most exciting football stars, and the upcoming awards ceremony will reveal if his efforts have earned him the continent’s highest football honor.
