Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton has hinted at a critical decision regarding his future this January, emphasizing the need to be “selfish” for the sake of his career.

The 22-year-old Wirral native, who climbed the ranks of Liverpool’s academy, debuted for his boyhood club in September 2021 during a Carabao Cup win over Norwich. Despite his promising start, Morton has spent the past two seasons on loan to secure consistent playing time.

His first loan spell saw him excel at Blackburn Rovers, making 46 appearances in all competitions during the 2022/23 season. This was followed by a season-long stint at Hull City, where he became a key player in midfield as the team narrowly missed out on Championship playoffs.

Interest in Morton has grown, with clubs in England and abroad reportedly vying for his services. Bayer Leverkusen’s transfer bid for the England U21 international was recently turned down, while Hull City and Sheffield United remain potential destinations. Speculation continues to mount over whether Morton will remain at Liverpool or secure another loan move before the January window closes.

“This month is a big one for me—it’s decision time,” Morton told Liverpool’s official website after playing in the FA Cup third-round win over Accrington Stanley. “I’m ready to kick on, to take the next step in my career. Whether that’s here or elsewhere, I need to be a bit selfish and follow what feels right for me.”

Morton, who made just his third start of the season in Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Accrington, believes his hard work in training has earned him opportunities. “It’s been a tough season for me in terms of minutes, but I’ve stayed focused and worked hard every day. I feel like I deserve a chance,” he added.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has tempered fans’ expectations about January signings, emphasizing trust in the current squad. “It would be strange to change direction now after being happy with the team in the summer,” Slot said.

Despite injuries like Joe Gomez’s temporary absence, Slot expressed confidence in his players. “This team has performed well in the first half of the season and deserves the club’s trust,” he stated, though he admitted Liverpool would remain vigilant in the transfer market for any unexpected opportunities.

With Morton’s future and Liverpool’s transfer activity both in question, January promises to be a decisive period for the club and its young talent.
