Virgil van Dijk expressed frustration over referee Stuart Attwell’s decision not to send off Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall before the youngster scored the decisive goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool.
The Carabao Cup semi-final first leg saw Spurs take a slender lead ahead of the return fixture at Anfield.
Bergvall, an 18-year-old talent, netted his first goal for Tottenham in the 86th minute, sparking jubilant celebrations among fans. Also Lucas Bergvall secured the job of Ange Postecogolou Who is at the verge of been sacked and replaced by Thomas Frank
However, Liverpool, the defending champions, felt aggrieved, arguing Bergvall should have received a second yellow card for a foul on Kostas Tsimikas just moments earlier.
The Swedish midfielder had already been booked in the 68th minute for a sliding challenge on Luis Diaz. Van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports post-match, was adamant the foul warranted another caution.
“It was clear to everyone that it should have been a second yellow,” Van Dijk said. “A minute later, he scores the winner, which feels like a bitter coincidence. I told the referee he made a mistake, but he disagreed.”
Despite his frustration, the Liverpool captain refused to pin the loss solely on the officiating. “I’m not saying this is why we lost,” Van Dijk added.
“But it was a pivotal moment. There’s a linesman, a fourth official, VAR, and the referee, yet it wasn’t given.”
The Dutch defender remains optimistic about Liverpool’s chances in the second leg, noting their resilience and strength at Anfield. “It’s only half-time in the tie. We created chances tonight, not clear-cut, but enough to believe we can turn it around.”
Reflecting on Tottenham’s performance, Van Dijk acknowledged their improved defense compared to their recent 6-3 Premier League loss to Liverpool. “They defended much better this time,” he admitted. “We’ll take it on the chin and prepare for the next 90 minutes.”
The second leg promises to be a thrilling encounter as Liverpool seek to overturn the deficit and book their place in the final.
