Despite a standout season with Bayer Leverkuse, where he scored 21 goals, provided 10 assists, and helped the team win both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, Boniface did not make the final list of ten contenders for the prestigious award.

Boniface, who missed the AFCON due to injury, humorously reacted to his snub by acknowledging his absence from the tournament likely played a role.

He playfully tweeted, “Rookie of the season. Team of the season. No worry I no play AFCON. Na why I dey wait for memes d’or.”

Among the CAF Player of the Year nominees are Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong from Nigeria, Achraf Hakimi from Morocco, and Serhou Guirassy from Guinea.
