The Napoli striker achieved this feat on Thursday night, scoring in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with the Cheetahs of Benin Republic during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Osimhen and Odegbami are now tied as Nigeria’s joint-second all-time top scorers, behind the iconic Rashidi Yekini, who netted 37 goals in just 58 matches.

Segun Odegbami, a revered figure in Nigerian football, welcomed the milestone with pride. Speaking on Eagle7fm, he said:

“It’s a good thing that he has equaled my record. This shows we now have players who can deliver the goals for the national team.”

Osimhen, widely regarded as one of the world’s top strikers, has been pivotal for Nigeria in recent years. He will have the opportunity to surpass Odegbami’s record when the Super Eagles host Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Monday.

With Osimhen’s current form, the question is not if but when he will close in on Yekini’s record. At just 25 years old, Osimhen has time on his side to write his name further into Nigerian football history.

The milestone also highlights the growing strength of the Super Eagles’ attack, with Osimhen leading a new generation of Nigerian talent ready to deliver on the international stage.

As the nation anticipates Monday’s clash, fans are eager to see if Osimhen will take sole possession of second place and edge closer to the legendary Yekini’s mark.
