Former Nigerian international goalkeeper Peter Rufai recently underscored the striker’s impact, praising his hunger for goals and ability to elevate the team’s performance whenever he steps onto the pitch.
Osimhen’s Impact in Numbers
Since his debut for the Super Eagles in June 2017, Osimhen has amassed an impressive record: 23 goals and 11 assists in 39 appearances.
His consistent performances have often been the deciding factor for Nigeria, with the team struggling to reach its attacking potential in his absence due to injuries or squad rotations.
Rufai’s Take on Osimhen’s Influence
Speaking to SoftFootball.com, Rufai emphasized the unique qualities that Osimhen brings to the national team.
While acknowledging the contributions of other strikers, he highlighted the Galatasaray star’s ability to deliver during crucial moments.
“We also have other players who can play when Osimhen is not there. The point is that when Osimhen comes into a team, he makes a difference. It’s not like the other players do not have their impact; they also make their impact.
“But don’t forget in life that to be a champion, you just have to give everything, and that is an area where Osimhen is doing very well. He’s always hungry for goals and ready to give his best whenever he is called upon to represent the Super Eagles.”
Why Osimhen Stands Out
Rufai noted that Osimhen’s relentless drive and ability to seize opportunities set him apart.
He added that while other players in the same position might occasionally have an off day, Osimhen’s consistency and work ethic often put him in the spotlight for all the right reasons.
“Other players that play in the same position with him may experience a bad day. The fact that the match is important to the fans means that player’s performance—or lack thereof—becomes more noticeable,” Rufai explained.
“Football is something that comes differently; when it comes rough, we try to see how to manage that roughness and turn it into good. But not every time it works.”
The Super Eagles’ Reluctant Reliance
Osimhen’s ability to lead the line effectively underscores Nigeria’s reliance on him in attack. His physicality, sharp instincts, and determination to score have often bailed the team out of challenging situations.
However, Rufai’s comments also highlight the importance of building a well-rounded squad that can adapt and excel even in Osimhen’s absence.
As the Super Eagles aim for greater success on the international stage, nurturing talents to complement Osimhen’s brilliance will be key. For now, the 24-year-old remains the undisputed spearhead of Nigeria’s attack, carrying the hopes of fans and teammates alike with every performance.
