Wayne Rooney, a legendary figure at Manchester United, has been linked with a potential coaching role at his former club just days after parting ways with Championship side Plymouth Argyle.

Rooney, 38, mutually agreed to leave Plymouth following a challenging tenure that saw the club languish at the bottom of the Championship.

During his stint, Rooney managed only four wins in 23 league games, marking another difficult chapter in his managerial career after similar struggles at Birmingham City and Derby County.

Despite these setbacks, Rooney’s former Manchester United teammate Wes Brown believes he could bring immense value to the Red Devils as a striking coach.

Brown highlighted Rooney’s wealth of experience as a prolific goalscorer and playmaker, suggesting that his guidance could greatly benefit young forwards like Rasmus Højlund.

“If Wayne wanted to spend time as a striking coach, he would be absolutely brilliant at it,” Brown told The Sports Daily. “He was one of the best goalscorers we’ve ever seen and a top playmaker. Young strikers would love to listen to Wayne and his knowledge.”

Reflecting on Rooney’s departure from Plymouth, Brown acknowledged the difficulties but commended his character: “Wayne is a good guy. He’ll be disappointed, but he’ll keep his head up and be ready for another challenge soon.”

Rooney, who remains Manchester United’s all-time top scorer and a Premier League legend, expressed gratitude to Plymouth’s board, fans, and staff, stating the club will “always hold a special place in my heart.”

While Rooney’s next move remains uncertain, the prospect of him returning to Old Trafford in a coaching capacity has sparked excitement among fans eager to see one of the club’s greatest icons contribute to its future success.

Manchester United, meanwhile, continues to navigate a turbulent season under Ruben Amorim, showing some promise with a spirited 2-2 draw against Liverpool in their latest Premier League fixture.
