West Ham United may have to face Premier League leaders Liverpool without their experienced goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who remains a major doubt after a serious injury during the Hammers’ 1-0 victory over Southampton on Boxing Day.

The 39-year-old was forced off in the first half following a collision with Southampton’s Nathan Wood while attempting to clear the ball. The impact left Fabianski needing oxygen and extensive treatment on the field before he was stretchered off.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui confirmed that Fabianski is recovering but hinted at Alphonse Areola stepping into the starting lineup for Sunday’s crucial fixture. The French goalkeeper replaced Fabianski during the Southampton match and delivered a solid performance.
“I’ve always emphasized the importance of the bench players being ready,” Lopetegui said. “Alphonse showed he was prepared, just like [Jean-Clair] Todibo, [Edson] Alvarez, and others. This team mentality is what keeps us going. Everyone will have their moment, and today Alphonse stepped up brilliantly.”
Lopetegui also praised defender Jean-Clair Todibo and returning player Aaron Cresswell for their contributions during the Southampton game, highlighting their readiness to perform despite injuries and limited opportunities.
Providing an update on Fabianski, Lopetegui reassured fans about the goalkeeper’s condition: “He had a significant knock around the head and neck, and he was uncertain about his actions after the collision. However, the doctors have been monitoring him closely. He’s alert, talking, and feeling much better now, which is a relief.”
As West Ham prepares to host Liverpool, Lopetegui is confident in the depth of his squad, especially in Areola’s ability to handle the pressure of facing the league leaders. With Fabianski’s status still uncertain, all eyes will be on Areola to fill the void and help West Ham maintain their strong run in the Premier League.
