Andre Onana has been advised to reconsider his future at Manchester United if his performances under manager Ruben Amorim fail to improve by next summer.

Signed by Erik ten Hag in July 2023 as a replacement for David de Gea, Onana’s time at Old Trafford has been inconsistent.

While the 28-year-old has showcased exceptional reflex saves, his occasional mistakes have drawn scrutiny.

Recently, his position was questioned again after a costly error during a match against Wolves, where he misjudged a corner, contributing to United’s third consecutive defeat. Reports suggest that the club may explore the transfer market for competition in the goalkeeper position.

Former United goalkeeper Massimo Taibi has now urged Onana to reflect on his future, suggesting he may not be a good fit for the Premier League. Taibi, who had a brief and troubled spell at United, empathized with the Cameroonian’s struggles.

“If I were him, I’d say, ‘Andre, you’re one of Europe’s top goalkeepers, but you’re underperforming in the Premier League,’” Taibi told The Sun. “Block out the noise, reset, and try again. But if nothing changes by June, it may be time to move on.”

Taibi believes Onana’s issues stem from an incompatibility with the English game. “He’s a talented goalkeeper, but the Premier League doesn’t suit his style. He’s only effective in England when it comes to his ball-playing skills and physical presence.”

Despite criticism from figures like former striker Chris Sutton, manager Ruben Amorim has defended Onana. Speaking after the Wolves game on Boxing Day, Amorim dismissed the scrutiny.

“I don’t think he could have reached the ball. Others weren’t even focused on it,” Amorim said. “But I’d rather not dwell on that. Even with 10 men, we created chances, which is encouraging, though we lost.”

For Onana, the coming months will be crucial in determining his long-term future at the club.
