Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot reportedly turned down the chance to sign Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, opting instead to trust Ryan Gravenberch, who has emerged as a revelation this season.
Ugarte, who joined Manchester United after a disappointing stint at Paris Saint-Germain, was offered to several clubs, including Liverpool, following a lackluster period in France.
PSG had signed Ugarte from Sporting Lisbon for over £50m in 2023, only to offload him at a loss a year later.
At United, Ugarte has struggled to adapt, starting just nine of their 21 Premier League games due to poor form and fitness. His performances have drawn criticism from Liverpool legends Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness.
Souness labeled Ugarte “not good enough” for a top club, while Carragher noted his limited impact at PSG. Even Ugarte has admitted the adjustment to England’s top flight has been challenging, describing the Premier League as the “best league in the world.”
Liverpool, meanwhile, initially pursued Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi but missed out. Ugarte was presented as an alternative, yet Slot declined, showing faith in Gravenberch.
The Dutch midfielder has thrived under Slot, starting all 19 Premier League games and earning praise from pundits like Ian Wright.
Wright noted Gravenberch’s surprising ability to play a defensive role despite being naturally more offensive-minded. “Liverpool don’t just sign the next available player,” Wright remarked. “They’ve found a solid solution in Gravenberch.”
Gravenberch himself credits Slot for his resurgence. “I feel confident and comfortable under him,” he told ESPN Netherlands. “He has a clear plan, and that clarity helps me perform.”
While Ugarte continues to face skepticism, United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy remains optimistic about his potential. “Manuel has great qualities,” van Nistelrooy said. “He’s a fantastic professional who recovers balls and transitions well into attack. It’s too early for conclusions.”
As Liverpool celebrates Gravenberch’s success, Manchester United and Ugarte will aim to prove that patience can still pay off at the Theatre of Dreams Through the re- union of the new Head Coach
